Our Rich History

The New Hampshire Women's Lobby began in the fall of 1980 as a special project of the Commission on the Status of Women. The need was identified to develop a women's organization whose sole purpose was to lobby on public policy issues at the state level on behalf of women.

The "Women's Legislative & Information Project" changed its name to the NH Women's Lobby (NHWL) and hired our first part time lobbyist for the 1981 legislative session. We also instituted the Lobby Letter, a well-respected legislative newsletter for members. Successes that first session included removal of the spousal exception in the state sexual assault laws, establishment of a marriage license surcharge to support programs to aid victims of domestic violence, and defeat of anti-abortion bills.
